Last year’s Rugged Adventure with Trystan Hart in Idaho taught me one thing, bike prep matters. This year I built out my Tenere and put together my own version, a …two-day, super technical loop through Arapaho National Forest and a handful of old, deserted mines, all from my backyard in the Colorado foothills.
I used onX Offroad to map the sections I’d never ridden and piece the whole loop together. It makes building loops and out-and-backs easy, and you never have to worry about getting lost. You can follow along yourself on onX Offroad with my Rugged Adventures folder.

Day 1
Started at Bivouac coffee in Evergreen, CO. Fitting name, since a bivouac is a temporary camp in the wilderness with little to no shelter.
Mountain pass road, then a wild dirt switchback descent into Idaho Springs. Stopped at a creepy mine with some very questionable water coming out of it. I passed on going in. Took OHV trails from the Barbour Forks Trailhead, and then made my way over to Devil’s Canyon. Camped at a dead end somewhat protected from the wind. October nights get cold, and a moose or elk trotting past my tent at midnight scared the hell out of me and didn’t help me sleep.
Day 2
Freezing start down Chicago Creek (heated MSR ADV gloves came in clutch!) Took Cascade Creek over to Spring Creek, with old silver mine tailings and some super rugged terrain. Met up with my enduro buddies who rode with me for a couple of hours. Hopped back on the Spring Creek trail (rated 8/10 on onX). Struggled with the loose dirt on dual sport tires, but felt great in the rocks. Dropped from near the top of Saxon Mountain down to Georgetown with some nerve-racking exposure on a narrow, rocky two-track. Had a late lunch at Cabin Creek Brewing in Georgetown before hitting the Mill Creek loop in Empire. Dropped down a nasty downhill back along i70 before meandering my way back and finishing up at Syd’s on the Green at the Evergreen Golf Course
It was way gnarlier than last year, but with the Tenere set up properly it was a much better ride.

The vibes were all time in Nampa, ID for round 2 of Endurocross. We had a solid evening going until the final moto when I got tangled up in the …first turn crash. Took me a second to get going again, but felt good once the adrenaline kicked in. Bad night for points with 5,3,12 moto scores, but we are ready for a solid week of training and to come out swinging in Everett this weekend.

Colorado Dealer Cup was last weekend at Thunder Valley and the Industry class was absolutely stacked!!! All the pro racers were saying it was the most insane lineup for a …race in CO history besides for the nationals of course. Kyle Deroche hit me up to race for Vickery Motorsports. The owner, Bill, is an absolute legend in motorsports here in CO and I couldn’t turn down the offer to do my first ever mx race.
The intensity was insane, but it was great crosstraining for me and I’m really glad I did it. Maybe we’ll actually put a little more effort into this event for next year! Just gotta figure out how to get my pro card for next year to try and line up next to my ‘cousin’, Cooper Webb, at the Thunder Valley national.

Not a bad night of racing for us and a better start to the season than we had last year. Had a little luck on our side with the scoring of all three motos, but we salvaged a 4th overall after going head first into the tractor tire in moto 2.

20 Days of Bike Setup Tips – Day 3 – Brake Pedal Height
Day 3 of tips for bike setup that will set you up for success!
A low back brake pedal is often the cause of riders either not using the back …brake enough or riders riding in a bad body position.
This simple adjustment is going to change your riding by leaps and bounds. That brake pedal needs to be accessible without you needing to bring your knee forward to get to it. Knees should stay in line with the footpegs MOST OF THE TIME. There are exceptions to every rule.
When you bring the knees forwards, you put yourself into a weak, unstable body position, while simultaneously un-weighting the rear end of the bike, reducing your traction.
Take the time to adjust your pedal high enough! If you’re used to it being low, it’s going to be awkward and first and it will force you to change your body position. I can promise you though, that in the long run, you’ll be a much faster and more confident rider because of it.
When adjusting the pedal, make sure you adjust the height of the pedal before adjusting how much play is in the pedal. When adjusting the play, you don’t to leave a hair of play to ensure the brake isn’t always on.

Day 2 of tips for a bike setup that’ll set you up for success!
Mousses (aka bibs) are going to be your best bet for reliability and traction! If you’re currently …running tubes in your tires, there is always the risk of getting pinch flats, and your unable to air down low enough to get the best traction if you’re wanting to ride the more extreme terrain. I personally like the @michelinmotorcycle mousses because they’re nice and light and they last a long time.
As trails become more technical and difficult, a lower air pressure or softer feel in the rear becomes more important. The softer the rear tire is, the more it can squat down and wrap around roots and rocks for traction. Too much air or a hard feel will cause spinning and deflection in the slippery stuff.
For regular cross country or higher speed riding, I’ll run a mousse straight out of the box because they come feeling like around 8-10psi depending on the brand and model.
For hard enduro riding, I run a super worn out mousse. If I have to run a new one, I’ll modify it to make it softer. This includes shaving it down and drilling holes in it. My modified/worn out mousses will offer me around a 4psi feel or less which gives me lots of traction.
The downside to mousses are that they wear out over time (most riders get 1-2 years out of a set) and they cost a lot more than tubes. Another thing that some people don’t like is that they feel heavier than tubes and can make the bike feel more planted.
In my opinion, they are well worth running! Once you switch from tubes to mousses, you’ll never want to go back. Even just for the reliability aspect, they’re really so nice to have.
Another option is the Tubliss system. It’s the best in my opinion for ULTIMATE traction in the gnarly stuff, but it’s not as problem-free/reliable as mousses. I can do a video on that system if anyone is interested.

Running a gummy tire will be a game changer for you in the more technical terrain. …This includes rocks, creeks, roots, and basically anything slippery!
A gummy tire is a blanket term for any tire with a super soft, gummy rubber compound. Pretty much every tire brand makes a gummy nowadays and some are better than others. I always recommend the Michelin Enduro Xtrem. It’s about as sticky as it gets and is made of high quality rubber! This means it’ll stick to the roots and rocks like Velcro and give you traction in places you never thought possible.
Now the main downside to a gummy tire is that they won’t last as long as a regular, hard compound tire. We are trading performance for longevity in a sense. BUT, if you go with a high quality gummy like the Michelin Enduro XTrem, you’ll get surprising longevity out of such a soft tire.
