Got a good start and spent most of the race locked in a battle with Eddie Karlsson on his Stark. Playing cat and mouse the whole way keeping each other honest section after section. There’s something genuinely cool about racing what feels like the future of the sport — Eddie on a full electric Stark, and me still grinding it out on the traditional YZ250. Two completely different approaches to hard enduro, same fight for the same position.

I cut out all the dead time nobody wants to watch and threw voiceover commentary on every technical section, so you’re getting straight to the nitty gritty. All the best action from the race with the context to actually understand what’s happening.Show More

This was it, win or lose 2nd overall in the US Hard Enduro championship, all coming down to the final race. I needed to finish a few positions ahead of …Ryder LeBlonde to lock up second overall, and nothing about this one made it easy.

The field this year was stacked with some serious international talent showing up to TKO, and honestly, going up against that level of competition is probably what pushed me to dig deeper this weekend.

The final itself was chaos from the start. Made a big mistake early on that first lap which could’ve ended my second place run right there, but managed to claw it back and settle in. Had one heart-stopping moment mid-race where I nearly took out our very own US Hard Enduro media director, one of those moments where time slows down and you’re just hoping everyone’s okay. Outside of that it was a clean, focused ride, until the final lap where I was completely and utterly cooked. Emptied the tank on this one.

Ended up securing 2nd place overall in the US Hard Enduro National Championship. It was an absolute grind of a season, and this final summed up exactly why hard enduro is the gnarliest sport out there.Show More

Tennessee Knockout weekend, and this one had it all. Typical last-minute bike prep, an Airbnb we’re still not sure would ever pass an inspection, and the best spectators in all …of hard enduro.

Got the chance to rip a custom-built Yamaha hillclimb bike running an MT09 engine before race day which was an absolute beast, and something I never expected to throw a leg over out here. If you’ve never seen one of these things move, you’re in for a treat.

Then it was back to business: buttoned up the YZ250 with the Athena 300 kit the night before (per usual, we cut it close), dealt with cockroaches and actual mushrooms growing in our Airbnb, and lined up for one of the most brutal races on the calendar.

Ended up 6th in the race and, more importantly, 2nd overall in the championship for the year. Huge shoutout to everyone who came out to watch and cheer. The fans at TKO are next level, and it makes every gnarly rock section worth it. Was also super rad to have the support from Yamaha this weekend with their team from Georgia showing up.

Also stoked to see Bender close out the season with a top 10 finish. Solid way to wrap up the year.

20 Days of Bike Setup Tips – Day 3 – Brake Pedal Height

Day 3 of tips for bike setup that will set you up for success!

A low back brake pedal is often the cause of riders either not using the back …brake enough or riders riding in a bad body position.

This simple adjustment is going to change your riding by leaps and bounds. That brake pedal needs to be accessible without you needing to bring your knee forward to get to it. Knees should stay in line with the footpegs MOST OF THE TIME. There are exceptions to every rule.

When you bring the knees forwards, you put yourself into a weak, unstable body position, while simultaneously un-weighting the rear end of the bike, reducing your traction.

Take the time to adjust your pedal high enough! If you’re used to it being low, it’s going to be awkward and first and it will force you to change your body position. I can promise you though, that in the long run, you’ll be a much faster and more confident rider because of it.

When adjusting the pedal, make sure you adjust the height of the pedal before adjusting how much play is in the pedal. When adjusting the play, you don’t to leave a hair of play to ensure the brake isn’t always on.

Day 2 of tips for a bike setup that’ll set you up for success!

Mousses (aka bibs) are going to be your best bet for reliability and traction! If you’re currently …running tubes in your tires, there is always the risk of getting pinch flats, and your unable to air down low enough to get the best traction if you’re wanting to ride the more extreme terrain. I personally like the @michelinmotorcycle mousses because they’re nice and light and they last a long time.

As trails become more technical and difficult, a lower air pressure or softer feel in the rear becomes more important. The softer the rear tire is, the more it can squat down and wrap around roots and rocks for traction. Too much air or a hard feel will cause spinning and deflection in the slippery stuff.

For regular cross country or higher speed riding, I’ll run a mousse straight out of the box because they come feeling like around 8-10psi depending on the brand and model.

For hard enduro riding, I run a super worn out mousse. If I have to run a new one, I’ll modify it to make it softer. This includes shaving it down and drilling holes in it. My modified/worn out mousses will offer me around a 4psi feel or less which gives me lots of traction.

The downside to mousses are that they wear out over time (most riders get 1-2 years out of a set) and they cost a lot more than tubes. Another thing that some people don’t like is that they feel heavier than tubes and can make the bike feel more planted.

In my opinion, they are well worth running! Once you switch from tubes to mousses, you’ll never want to go back. Even just for the reliability aspect, they’re really so nice to have.

Another option is the Tubliss system. It’s the best in my opinion for ULTIMATE traction in the gnarly stuff, but it’s not as problem-free/reliable as mousses. I can do a video on that system if anyone is interested.

Day 1 of tips for a bike setup that’ll set you up for success!

Running a gummy tire will be a game changer for you in the more technical terrain. …This includes rocks, creeks, roots, and basically anything slippery!

A gummy tire is a blanket term for any tire with a super soft, gummy rubber compound. Pretty much every tire brand makes a gummy nowadays and some are better than others. I always recommend the Michelin Enduro Xtrem. It’s about as sticky as it gets and is made of high quality rubber! This means it’ll stick to the roots and rocks like Velcro and give you traction in places you never thought possible.

Now the main downside to a gummy tire is that they won’t last as long as a regular, hard compound tire. We are trading performance for longevity in a sense. BUT, if you go with a high quality gummy like the Michelin Enduro XTrem, you’ll get surprising longevity out of such a soft tire.
